Stormwater Management

How and When to Fertilize Your Lawn

While fertilizer may help our lawns, excess phosphorus and nitrogen in our waterways causes algae to grow faster than aquatic ecosystems can handle. By properly applying and limiting the usage of lawn fertilizer, you can help protect our water resources from this form of pollution.

1. Get your Soil Tested: Determine if fertilizer is even necessary or if it is just a waste of your time and money!

2. Apply When Dry: Watch the weather, don’t apply fertilizer right before a rainstorm.

3. Read the Label: Use phosphorus-free products on your lawn.
